Robust solutions for sustainable forests
CLIMB-FOREST is a Horizon Europe project
Working closely with the forestry sector and policy makers, CLIMB-FOREST aims to ensure Europe’s forests are resilient to the changing climate and support people and nature.
Forests are complex networks…
Planting trees and restoring forests can play an important role in mitigating the climate crisis.
Under the European Green Deal, the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030 commits to planting at least 3 billion additional trees in the EU by 2030.
However, single-species or poorly planned forests can be more vulnerable to droughts, fires, insect attacks and the changing climate.
Robust, healthy forests support people and nature…
Well planned and managed forests support a diverse range of plants and animals and can provide additional opportunities for local people such as tourism or sustainable wood harvesting.
CLIMB-FOREST will use the latest data from forest research stations and satellites to support the planning and management of Europe’s new and existing forests.
New tools and resources
CLIMB-FOREST will collaborate with the forestry sector to develop new tools, interactive maps and best practice guidance.
What we’re working on
-
Mapping
Mapping the management history and the current state of Europe’s forests to better understand the impact different forest management methods have on forests across Europe.
-
Data
Using data from long-term monitoring sites and satellite observations to assess and quantify climate effects occurring in forests across Europe.
-
Products
Working to better understand how wood products and forest management practices can contribute to a sustainable bioeconomy.
-
Management
Working closely with forest owners, forest policy makers and other key stakeholder to identify the most optimal forest management options for the coming decades.
-
Modelling
Bringing together advanced modelling capacity and state-of-the-art scenarios to explore how forests will change in the future.
